MUMBAI – Prices of chana fell in key markets across the country Thursday due to the availability of cheaper imported yellow peas, traders said. Prices of tur fell due to arrivals of the new kharif crop from Karnataka, while those of moong and masur were steady, they said.

CHANA prices in Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh were down by INR 200 from Wednesday to INR 5,800-6,700 per 100 kg, Dinesh Mangal, a local trader, said. Demand for domestic chana is extremely low due to the availability of yellow peas as a cheaper alternative, Mangal said. The country imported more than 1 million tonnes of yellow peas in Apr-Sept, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Prices of yellow peas range between INR 3,000-4,000 per 100 kg, making it significantly cheaper than chana. "Yellow peas cost less than chana, and they are cheaper to process and use as dal and in food products such as namkeen," Mangal said.

Prices of domestic chana were also weighed down by the availability of cheaper imports from Australia, Mangal said. Exports of Australian chana to India rose sharply to 109,622 tonnes in October from 25,692 tonnes in September, the India Pulses and Grains Association reported, citing data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

However, prices of chana in Akola in Maharashtra were steady at INR 6,875-6,900 per 100 kg, according to the association.

Prices of the new kharif TUR in Solapur in Maharashtra were down by INR 500 from Wednesday to INR 9,000-9,500 per 100 kg, Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader said. Arrivals of the new tur were at 55–60 trucks, or 55,000-60,000 kg, he said.

Arrivals of the new kharif crop from Karnataka is negatively affecting the prices of tur, Sanklecha said. "The market is receiving small batches of the new crop, and they still have a moisture content of 15-16%, which is high," he said. A higher moisture content lowers the quality. However, as arrivals continue, moisture levels are expected to reduce in the crop, he said.

Sanklecha expects prices of tur to drop further by INR 1,500-2,000 per 100 kg by mid-January when the new crop from Maharashtra starts arriving in markets.

Prices of the new kharif tur in Kalaburagi in Karnataka were down by INR 100 from Wednesday to INR 9,500-10,000 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals of the new tur were down by 200 bags to 700 bags (1 bag = 100 kg).

MOONG prices in Solapur were steady at INR 7,200-8,400 per 100 kg, Sanklecha said. Prices are being supported by the government's procurement activities, he said. However, procurement is occuring at a very slow pace, he said. "If not for the procurement, prices could have fallen due to low demand for moong," he said.

The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India has procured 26 tonnes of the Centre-approved quantity of 29,108 tonnes of moong in Maharashtra as of Monday, under the price support scheme, according to data released by the federation.

MASUR prices in Vidisha were steady at INR 5,500-6,150 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Prices are steady as supply is on par with demand, he said. "Prices keep fluctuating by INR 50-100 per 100 kg, but the changes are temporary and the overall outlook of prices for the next few weeks is seen as steady," he said.

Prices of the moti variety of masur were steady in the key wholesale market of Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh at INR 5,700-INR 5,950 per 100 kg. Prices of the choti variety were also steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, the association said.  End
