MUMBAI – Around 17.2 million tonnes of paddy has been procured from farmers in Punjab so far in the kharif marketing season 2024-25 (Oct-Sept), the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution said Wednesday.
The paddy, procured by state government agencies at the minimum support price of INR 2,320 per 100 kg, is delivered to the Food Corp. of India, the ministry said in a release, citing the written reply by Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, minister of state for consumer affairs, food, and public distribution, to a question in the Lok Sabha Wednesday.
Of the 17.2 million tonnes procured, 16.9 million tonnes has been shifted from local markets in the state and stored at various mill points for further milling, the minister said in her reply, adding that the FCI has begun accepting rice from millers as per government specifications, and 94,000 tonnes of rice has already been accepted.
Efforts are being made at every level to ensure the quality of stocks, the minister said. "The government is committed to procure all quantity of paddy offered for sale in Punjab as per the quality specification laid down and to ensure that the benefit of the minimum support price regime is smoothly realised by all the farmers," the ministry said in its release.
The ministry also said no incidents had been reported of rice being smuggled into Punjab from other states, nor any instance of undue rejection of rice on grounds of quality.
