MUMBAI – Prices of tur are expected to remain volatile in the near-term amid a drop in purchases ahead of arrivals of the new kharif crop, along with low supply of the domestic varieties and limited imports from Myanmar, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report released on Monday.

While prices could drop, they are unlikely to fall substantially due to low supply of the pulse. The new kharif crop arrivals and the cost and freight prices of the upcoming Myanmar imports will play a key role in shaping future prices, the association said.

Similarly, any rise in prices could be limited due to a large stock of imports from Africa in the Mumbai port, which is raising concerns about prices.

The price difference between the domestic lemon variety of tur and the African imports of tur, though said to be substantial, is uncertain, the association said. The uncertainty of the price difference makes predictions of price trends in the near future difficult, it said.

Prices of tur fell in major trading hubs in the week ended Saturday due to lower prices of the lemon variety of tur from Myanmar and cheaper stocks of African tur. Prices were also weighed down due to a rise in small arrivals of the new kharif crop in parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, the report said.

In the week ended Saturday, prices of tur in Akola in Maharashtra were down by INR 475 from the previous week to INR 10,200-10,250 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the new kharif tur in Kalaburagi in Karnataka, were also down INR 226 from the previous week at INR 10,500-10,800 per 100 kg.  End
