MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of south India, and extremely heavy rainfall over parts of the ghat districts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and in south interior Karnataka on Monday. The IMD has issued a red alert in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and south interior Karnataka for Monday. A red alert indicates rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls is likely over Kerala, south interior Karnataka, coastal Karnataka, Rayalaseema and Lakshwadeep during the week, the weather bureau said.
The IMD said Cyclone 'Fengal' over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry weakened into a well-marked low pressure area over northern interior Tamil Nadu earlier in the day. The remnant low pressure area is likely to emerge in the southeast and the adjoining east central Arabian Sea, off north Kerala and Karnataka coasts on Tuesday.
The weather department issued a warning for fishermen and asked them not to venture along and off the Kerala and Karnataka coasts, Lakshwadeep, and southeast and east central Arabian Sea this week.
During the last 24 hours, parts of Krishnagiri and Villupuram districts of northern Tamil Nadu received exceptionally heavy rainfall. With water rising above the danger level on an arterial bridge between Vikravandi and Mundiyampakkam in Villupuram, Southern Railway on Monday morning announced suspension of operations in the stretch, according to a report by The Hindu.
No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over northwest, central, and east India in the next two-three days, after which temperatures could fall gradually by two-three degrees Celsius. No changes in minimum temperatures are likely over west India in the next four-five days, IMD said. End
