NEW DELHI – India needs to boost investments in agricultural warehousing, processing, logistics, and value chain development to make farming sustainable, Franklin L. Khobung, joint secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, said Friday. "We need investments to have more infrastructure so that food waste is minimized," Khobung said, speaking at the 4th edition of Sustainable Agriculture Summit & Awards hosted by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry.

With limited land and growing population, farming communities need support to increase productivity and build capacity to ensure food security. "We aim to cover more area under micro irrigation," he said.

On warehouse infrastructure, the government acknowledges the need to do a lot more to have sufficient storage, the joint secretary said. We need to have more processing units, and market linkages, he said.

India needs to focus on reducing post-harvest losses by strengthening the agricultural supply chain and deploying artificial intelligence, said Mansi Chaturvedi, head private-partnerships, UN World Food, who attended the event. Other panelists also stressed the need to increase farm productivity, technical knowledge transfer, and organic farming to promote sustainable farming.  End
