MUMBAI - Prices of moong are likely to remain weak in the near term due to a drop in purchases by millers and muted demand for moong mogar (split moong) and dal, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report. Consumption in the country has shifted from moong to cheaper alternatives such as moth, chaula, and yellow peas, especially for chaat and namkeen preparations, pushing prices further down, the association said.
Inactive stockists and ample government stocks may continue to put pressure on prices, the report said. Prices could also fall due to higher kharif production of moong this year. The agriculture ministry estimates kharif production of the pulse to rise by nearly 20% on year to 1.4 million tonnes.
Prices of moong fell in the week ended Saturday due to reduced buying by millers, traders, and stockists, the association said. Prices were also hit as the government, which has ample older stocks of the pulse, has been selling at lower prices in some states.
In the week ended Saturday, prices of the new kharif moong in Gadag in Karnataka fell by INR 180 per 100 kg to INR 7,000-8,209 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the new crop in Udgir in Maharashtra also fell by INR 600 per 100 kg to INR 6,500-7,500 per 100 kg. However, prices remained the same in other parts of the state such as Latur and Jalna.
