MUMBAI – In the 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) season, India's sugar mills have produced 710,000 tonnes of the sweetener as of Friday, down 44% on year from 1.27 million tonnes in the same period a year ago, according to data from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories. The federation estimates net sugar production across the country in 2024-25 at 28 million tonnes, down 12% from 31.9 million tonnes produced last season.

Sugarcane production so far this season has been lower as mills in Maharashtra are yet to start crushing, while there is a decline in crushing in other major producers like Karnataka, Gujarat, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu. In the corresponding period last year, 103 mills in Maharashtra had produced 240,000 tonnes of sugar from 3.60 million tonnes of sugarcane. In the current sugar year, the federation sees the state's sugar production for 2024-25 at 8.7 million tonnes, compared to 11.02 million tonnes produced a year ago.

During the early sugar season, only 144 sugar mills were in operation, against 264 sugar mills in the same period a year ago. The country's average sugar recovery rate was 7.82%, largely unchanged from last year, the federation said. So far this season, mills have crushed 9.07 million tonnes of sugarcane, compared to 16.26 million tonnes a year ago.

In Uttar Pradesh, 85 mills have crushed 4.84 million tonnes of sugarcane to produce 380,000 tonnes of sugar as of Friday. This is comparatively higher than the production during the same period last year, where only 75 mills had crushed 3.95 million tonnes of cane and produced 340,000 tonnes of sugar. The federation estimates sugar production in the state at 9.8 million tonnes in the current year, down from 10.37 million tonnes a year. The average sugar recovery is also down at 7.85% from 8.60% a year ago.

As of Friday, 40 mills in Karnataka crushed 2.63 million tonnes of sugarcane, compared to 5.38 million tonnes crushed by 50 mills a year ago. So far this season, mills in the state have produced 210,000 tonnes of sugar, down 51% from 430,000 tonnes a year ago.

The federation estimates sugar output in Karnataka at 4.5 million tonnes in 2024-25, down from 5.3 million tonnes last year. The average sugar recovery has been unchanged from the previous year at 8%.  End
