Rabi sowing of pulses showing signs of recovery, sentiment upbeat, says govt

MUMBAI – Preliminary reports showed the sowing of rabi crops such as chana, masur, urad, and moong, which was delayed initially across some states due to prolonged rains, is now recovering, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said in a press release Tuesday. The overall sentiment and sowing intention amongst farmers is upbeat due to expectation of good price realisation, the release said.
The Centre will upscale the onion disposal to address the temporary pressure on onion supplies in certain markets owing to festival demand and the closure of local markets, the release said. "NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd.) has indented two more rakes for the Delhi-NCR and one for Guwahati this week," the release said.
The government had already procured 470,000 tonnes of onion from the 2023-24 rabi season (Jul-Jun) as a buffer for price stabilisation. The Centre has been releasing these onions since Sept. 5 to various cities such as Delhi, Chennai, and Guwahati to be sold through bulk sales in major markets, and at the retail price of INR 35 per kg. So far, over 150,000 tonnes of the buffer has been dispatched from Nashik, Maharashtra the release said.
The retail prices of tomatoes have fallen due to a fall in wholesale prices, the release said. At Azadpur in Delhi, the weekly average price is down by 27% on week to INR 4,000 per 100 kg. In Pimpalgaon, Maharashtra, the weekly average price is down by 35% on week to INR 2,250 per 100 kg, while in Madanapalle in Andhra Pradesh, it is down by 26% on week to INR 2,860 per 100 kg amidst a 20% increase in total weekly arrivals. In Kolar, Karnataka, the weekly average price is down by 27% on week to INR 2,250 per 100 kg.
Prices of potato in the retail markets have been stable for the last three months at around INR 37 per kg, the release said. In Agra, Uttar Pradesh, the weekly average market prices are down 15% on week to INR 1,860 per 100 kg. Potato acreage in the country is expected to rise 16% on year, with a 10% increase in Punjab and Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh. In Madhya Pradesh, the progress of the potato acreage stands at 80%, the release said. Potato sowing in West Bengal is yet to begin this year, but it is seen higher on year as indicated by reports of seed sales so far, it said.
India has imported 1 million tonnes of tur and 640,000 tonnes of urad till the first week of November in 2024. The imports have already exceeded the total imports of the previous year, the release said.
Russia and India, represented by Maxim Titov, deputy minister of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, and Nidhi Khare, secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, respectively, held discussions on Monday to enhance cooperation in the trade of pulses, the release said. Russia is a major exporter of masur and yellow peas to India. This comes on the heels of India's strained relationship with Canada, which is also amongst the biggest exporters of pulses to the country. End
