MUMBAI – The Solvent Extractors' Association of India on Monday appealed to the government to lift the ban on de-oiled rice bran exports. The restriction is adversely impacting processors, exporters and paddy farmers from realising better returns on their produce, the association said in a release.

The industry benefits from exporting de-oiled rice bran as it leads to easy clearance of surplus meals, resulting in sustained processing, better capacity utilisation, continuous vegetable oil production, increased employment, and significant value addition along with earning valuable foreign exchange, the association said.

Moreover, eastern states such as West Bengal and Odisha are significant producers of de-oiled rice bran, but there is limited demand in these regions due to the underdeveloped cattle-feed industry. The high freight charges from eastern India to major consuming areas such as the southern and western parts of the country make exports the most convenient method for disposal of de-oiled rice bran in the region, the association said.

The total meal export from the country is down by 9% in Apr-Sept, which can be compensated by de-oiled rice bran export as India is competitive price-wise in the commodity, it said.

As meal prices are interrelated, lifting the export ban on de-oiled rice bran will reduce surplus and lower the prices of meals, the association said.

The government in August extended the ban on exports of de-oiled rice bran, used in the cattle-feed industry, till Jan. 31, 2025. Previously, India exported de-oiled rice bran primarily to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand, where it is used as pig feed.  End
