MUMBAI – Punjab's state agencies and Food Corp. of India have procured 8.5 million tonnes of paddy out of the 9.1 million tonnes that arrived at the state's mandis as of Saturday, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said in a release on Sunday. While procurement of the kharif crop commenced late in the marketing season 2024-25 (Oct-Sep) due to heavy rain in September leading to high moisture content in the paddy, it is now back on track in full swing, the release said.
The paddy is being procured at the mandated minimum support price of INR 2,320 per 100 kg for grade 'A' paddy, with the total procurement bill till Saturday amounting to INR 198 billion, benefitting 400,000 farmers, the release said. Moreover, 4,640 millers have applied for shelling of paddy and 4,132 millers have already been allotted work by the state, it said.
Procurement of paddy in the state began on Oct. 1, with 2,700 designated mandis, including temporary yards, ensuring smooth operations, the release said. The Centre has fixed a procurement target of 18.5 million tonnes for the state, and procurement will continue till Nov. 30, it said. End
