Delhi receives another 840 tn onion Wednesday under price stabilisation fund

MUMBAI – Delhi received 840 tonnes onion via train, procured by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India under the price stabilisation fund of the Department of Consumer Affairs on Wednesday, according to a release by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Most of the onions will arrive at the Azadpur Mandi to support the overall availability of the vegetable in the market, while the rest will be sold at retail rates of INR 35 per kg, according to the release.
This is the second such bulk arrival of onions since the National Co-operative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd. brought 1,600 tonnes onion to the city by 'Kanda express' on Oct. 20. On Saturday, the National Agricultural Co-operative Marketing Federation of India transported 840 tonnes onion to Chennai from Nashik. Another train to Guwahati left from Nashik earlier on Wednesday with 840 tonnes onion procured by the National Co-operative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd.
Over 140,000 tonnes onion in the buffer have been dispatched till date from Nashik and other source centres to consuming centres through trucks by road transport, the release said. As of Wednesday, the National Co-operative Consumers' Federation of India has disposed onion in 104 locations in 22 states and the National Agricultural Co-operative Marketing Federation of India covered 52 locations in 16 states. Further, 86,500 tonnes onion have been allotted to nine state governments and cooperative societies for retail distribution.
"Since the start of onion disposal till date, the retail prices of onion have substantially stabilised in major states such as Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, UP (Uttar Pradesh), Tamil Nadu and Delhi," the release said. "The onion shipment by rail to Guwahati will enhance availability in North-eastern States and is expected to have a dampening impact on prices in the region and also on the all-India average." End
