MUMBAI – Allaying concerns of delays in the procurement of paddy from Punjab due to a delayed harvest because of heavy rainfall and higher moisture content in the crop, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi said that the procurement target of 18.5 million tonnes from the state in the kharif marketing season of 2024-25 will be fully met, according to a release. The minister also announced that an online portal for grievance redressal of rice millers will be launched shortly.
To ensure adequate storage arrangement for paddy, the government has undertaken measures such as speedy evacuation of wheat stock to deficit states, and hiring of central warehousing corporation godowns on a nomination basis. It has also ensured the expedited creation of 3.1 million tonnes of storage capacity under the Private Entrepreneurs Guarantee scheme, the release said.
Of the 5.45 million tonnes of paddy arrival in mandis, 5.0 million tonnes was procured as of Oct. 26. In comparison, of the 6.58 million tonnes paddy arrival in the corresponding period during the kharif marketing season of 2023-24, 6.15 million tonnes was procured. The minimum support price for paddy has seen a substantial rise from INR 1,310 per 100 kg in 2013-14 to INR 2,300 per 100 kg in 2024-25.
Of the All-India Movement plan of 3.47 million tonnes, around 40%, or 1.37 million tonnes, is allocated to Punjab for October. At present, around 1.5 million tonnes of storage space is vacant in Punjab. A detailed depot-wise plan has been prepared to evacuate 1.3-1.4 million tonnes of wheat every month from Punjab till March 2025, according to the release.
The procurement of paddy officially commenced in Punjab on Oct. 1, with 2,700 designated mandis, including temporary yards, ensuring smooth operations. Despite the late start, the state is on track to achieve its target of November, according to the release. End
