BRICS expresses concern over unilateral sanctions by US, Europe on nations

NEW DELHI – The leaders of BRICS nations--a grouping of Brazil, Russia, India China, and South Africa--on Wednesday expressed concern over the unilateral coercive measures, including illegal sanctions, imposed by the US and European countries on several nations, including Russia in the backdrop of ongoing war with Ukraine.
The US and the European countries have imposed a wide range of sanctions on Russia in an effort to cripple Russian economy. The sanctions targeted individuals, banks, businesses, monetary exchanges, bank transfers, exports, and imports.
"We reiterate that the unilateral coercive measures, inter-alia in the form of unilateral economic sanctions and secondary sanctions that are contrary to international law, have far-reaching implications for the human rights, including the right to development, of the general population of targeted states, disproportionally affecting the poor and people in vulnerable situations," the Kazan declarations said.
The leaders adopted Kazan Declarations on Wednesday at the end of the plenary session of the 16th BRICS Summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Kazan on Tuesday and Wednesday to take part in the Summit. He also held bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Summit.
The BRICS nations expressed concern over the violence in Gaza Strip and West Bank "as a result of Israeli military offensive" and stressed on the need for immediate and permanent ceasefire." "We stress the urgent need for an immediate, comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and detainees from both sides who are being illegally held captive and the unhindered sustainable and at scale supply of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, and cessation of all aggressive actions," the declaration said.
The BRICS nations denounced the Israeli attacks against humanitarian operations, facilities, personnel and distribution points. The members reaffirmed their support for the State of Palestine's full membership in the United Nations in the context of the unwavering commitment to the vision of the two-state solution. The Kazan Declaration condemned the loss of civilian lives and the immense damage to civilian infrastructure resulting from attacks by Israel in residential areas in Lebanon and called for immediate cessation of military acts.
The leaders of BRICS nations also stressed upon the importance of ensuring the exercise of navigational rights and freedoms of vessels of all states in the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandab Strait, in accordance with international law. “We encourage enhanced diplomatic efforts by all parties to that end, including by addressing the causes of the conflict, and continued support for dialogue and Yemen’s peace process under UN auspices," the declaration said.
