India's chana imports rise over 22 times on year in Aug to 29,245 tonnes

MUMBAI – India's imports of bengal gram, or desi chana, rose over 22 times to 29,244.57 tonnes in August from 1,318.65 tonnes a year ago, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The sharp spike was led by chana imports from Australia. India imported 87,732.21 tonnes of chana in Apr-Aug, up nearly 33 times from 2,659.77 tonnes in the same period last year.

 

Australia was the biggest exporter of chana to India in August at 24,084.57 tonnes, the data showed. India started importing chana from Australia in January 2024 when imports stood at 1,489.39 tonnes and have been rising since then.

 

Ethiopia was the second-largest exporter of chana to India at 3,984 tonnes in August. The other exporters of chana to India in August were Djibouti at 720 tonnes, Myanmar at 216 tonnes, and Tanzania at 240 tonnes.

 

Imports from Myanmar in the first five months of the current financial year 2024-2025 (Apr-Mar) were up 510.9% on year to 2,785.56 tonnes. On the other hand, imports from Tanzania fell 10.9% on year to 1,791.91 tonnes in Apr-Aug, the data showed.


The per tonne value of chana imported in August rose to $836.74 from $561.18 last year. The total value of chana imported in August surged 3,193.6% on year to $24.47 million, the data showed. The total value of chana imported during Apr-Aug was $67.65 million, up 3,849.5% from $1.71 million in the same period last year. 

 

India imported 338,259.19 tonnes of pulses in August, up 24.7% from 271,307.14 tonnes a year ago, the data showed.

 

Chana prices at Akola in Maharashtra were at INR 7,400-7,425 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of chana in the benchmark market of Indore in Madhya Pradesh, were at INR 7,325-7,350 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. End
