MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur continued to be on a downtrend across key spot markets in the country, traders said. Prices of moong and masur were steady, they said.

CHANA prices in Ashok Nagar, Madhya Pradesh, were down by INR 50 from Wednesday at INR 7,200 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kotcher, a local trader said. "Even though arrivals of chana are slowing down, demand for chana is even lower, pushing prices down," he said. Demand for chana usually rises substantially ahead of Diwali, but demand is not seen rising as much this year, he said. Millers had already stocked up on chana in the past few months, in anticipation of festival demand for besan, he said.

Prices of chana in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 7,350-7,400 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Arrivals were down by 100 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) at 300 bags.

TUR prices in Solapur in Maharashtra were down by INR 100-200 from Wednesday at INR 9,400-9,700 per 100 kg, Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader, said. Arrivals were steady at one-two trucks, or 10,000-20,000 kg. Demand for tur is seasonally low, he said. Prices of tur are further weighed down due to the availability of cheaper imports from African countries such as Mozambique, he said. "Prices of tur could fall further by INR 200-300 by the end of the week," he said.

Prices of tur in Akola were steady at INR 9,850-9,990 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals were steady at 200 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

MOONG prices in Solapur were steady at INR 7,200-7,900 per 100 kg, Sanklecha said. "Prices of moong have stabilised after falling by INR 400-500 in the past few weeks due to a rise in arrivals of the new moong crop," he said. Prices of moong are seen steady in the lower range for now, he said. While prices could rise due to the government's active procurement of moong in key states such as Karnataka, the change will be minimal, he said.

Prices of moong in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,500-7,500 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals were steady at 300 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

MASUR prices in Ashok Nagar were steady at INR 5,700-6,100 per 100 kg, Kotcher said. Arrivals were steady at 300 bags (1 bag = 100 kg). "Prices of masur keep changing by INR 100-200 every few weeks, but the fluctuations are temporary and minimal," he said. However, prices of masur could be affected due to the tensions in the India-Canada relations, he said. Canada is one of the major exporters of masur to India, and with the market sentiment under pressure, prices could go up, he said.

India's ties with Canada hit a new low Monday as each expelled the other's top diplomats. New Delhi and Ottawa have shared a frosty relationship ever since Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged in September last year that the Indian government may be involved in the murder of Sikh separatist activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, in June 2023.

However, trade conducted between private entities in the two countries will persist despite the diplomatic tensions, as per a report in the Mint newspaper which quoted Sunil Barthwal, commerce secretary, as saying on Thursday.  End
