Taking note of the naming of a civic volunteer as a prime accused in the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the West Bengal government to give data on the recruitment of civic volunteers in the state. The top court sought the legal source of authority for hiring of civic volunteers, details of their qualifications, the institutions in which they are assigned duties and the payment made to them.
