MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur continued to move southwards in key spot markets across the country owing to the availability of cheaper substitutes and imports, traders said. Prices of moong held steady, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were down by INR 50 from Thursday at INR 7,425-7,450 per 100 kg, Kailash Kakani, a local trader, said. Markets in Indore were closed Friday for Dussehra. "Demand for chana usually surges ahead of Diwali, but this year demand has been sluggish," Kakani said. With Diwali at the end of the month, demand for chana could pick up, but just slightly and temporarily, he said. Prices have also fallen due to the availability of cheaper yellow peas, which have more buyers in the northern part of the country, he said. "Cheaper yellow pea flour is used as a substitute for besan in many festival foods," he said.

Similarly, prices of chana in Akola, Maharashtra, were down by INR 50 from Friday at INR 7,425-7,450 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Arrivals were up by 500 bags to 700 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, were down by INR 100 from Friday at INR 10,000-10,200 per 100 kg, Rahul Srinivas, a local trader, said. Arrivals were steady at three-four trucks or 30,000-40,000 kg, he said. "Prices of domestic tur are under heavy pressure from imported tur," he said. Demand for tur imported from Myanmar and African countries such as Mozambique is higher as they are cheaper by INR 10-15 per kg, he said. Prices of domestic tur have already gone below the INR 10,000 per 100 kg mark in certain parts of the country, he said. "Prices could fall by INR 400 in the next few weeks," he said.

Prices of tur in the key spot market of Kalaburagi in Karnataka were down by INR 200 from Thursday at INR 9,011-10,725 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals were up by 770 bags to 1,184 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). The markets in Kalaburagi were also shut Friday for Dussehra.

MOONG prices in Kalaburagi were steady at INR 6,500-7,500 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals were steady at 6,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices of moong in Solapur were also steady at INR 7,200-8,300 per 100 kg, the association said.  End
