MUMBAI – Prices of chana and masur were steady Tuesday in key markets across India, said traders. However, prices of tur, moong, and urad were down, they added.
CHANA prices in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,400-INR 7,500 per 100 kg, said a local trader Dinesh Mangal. "Demand for the upcoming festivals is yet to begin," Mangal said. With Navratri starting on Thursday, prices could rise by INR 100-INR 120 by the end of the week due to firm festival demand, he said.
Limited availability of stock amid a further rise in demand for chana seeds for sowing, in anticipation of better returns from crops, is also likely to support prices, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report. Moreover, after the festival season, demand will remain firm as the wedding season in the country will start, which will support prices in the long run, the report added.
TUR prices in Akola in Maharashtra were down by INR 200 from Monday at INR 10,500-10,700 per 100 kg, Ashok Gupta, a local trader said. Arrivals were up by 100 bags to 800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). "Demand for tur will continue to be low due to the anticipation of the new crop arrivals in November," Gupta said. The new crop arrivals are expected to be higher, which will lower prices even further, he said.
Prices of tur in the key wholesale market of Kalaburagi in Karnataka were steady at INR 10,100-11,404 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals were down by 776 bags to 499 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
MOONG prices in Solapur in Maharashtra were down by INR 300–INR 400 rupees from Monday at INR 6,500-INR 7,000 per 100 kg, Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader said. "Arrivals in Maharashtra have increased substantially, driving prices down," he said. The Solapur market also receives moong from Karnataka, he added. Prices also fell as two to three trucks worth of arrivals of moong from Maharashtra are of lower quality, he said. The pulse has a high moisture content due to heavy rainfall in the state, reducing its quality, he said.
Prices of moong in Kalaburagi were steady at INR 7,000-INR 8,000 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals were steady at 3,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
URAD prices in Solapur were down by INR 50 rupees at INR 6,100-INR 8,150 per 100 kg, Sanklecha said. Arrivals in the market have risen sharply to 25–30 trucks, he said. "New crop arrivals in Maharashtra and Karnataka have started coming in, which is why prices are lower," he said. Similar to moong, the urad crop has also been affected by the heavy rainfall, with some arrivals having a high moisture content, lowering its quality. The lower grade urad is being sold at INR 6,100 per 100 kg, while the superior, polished quality is being sold at INR 8,150 per 100 kg, he said.
Prices of urad in Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh were steady at INR 6,000-INR 8,500 per 100 kg, the association said. Arrivals were steady at 7,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
MASUR prices in Vidisha were steady at INR 5,600-6,000 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Arrivals were steady at 300 bags (1 bag = 100 kg). "Prices may fall in the next few days as many masur traders have shifted to soybeans," he said. Arrivals of the new soybean crop have increased sharply, he added.
Prices of the moti variety of masur were steady in the key wholesale market of Lalitpur at INR 5,600-5,800 per 100 kg. Prices of the choti variety were also steady at INR 6,100-6,400 per 100 kg, according to the association. End
