MUMBAI – The Centre has increased the October sugar sales quota for Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh by 5.4% and 6.0%, respectively, from the previous month. The quotas for Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh for October are 964,065 tonne and 821,156 tonne, respectively, according to a notification by the Food and Public Distribution Department Monday. The quota for Karnataka, another major producer of the sweetener, has been raised by 4.2% from last month to 324,255 tonne in October.

The Centre Thursday set the October sugar sales quota for mills across the country at 2.55 million tonne, up from 2.35 million tonne the previous month but lower than 2.9 million tonne in October last year.

The central government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. As on Apr. 30, mills in the country had produced 31.4 million tonne of sugar, according to the Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association. The association expects Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to produce an additional 500,000-600,000 tonne of sugar, taking the country's total output to around 32.0 million tonne this season.

The government said some mills across the country had violated the stockholding limits for July and sold sugar in excess of their release quota. Consequently, it was decided that the excess quantity of sugar sold during July be deducted from the quota for October for the concerned mills, the government said in a release. The government also said that considering the less utilisation of quota in July due to heavy rains and Kawad yatra in north India and an extension given up to Aug. 15, it has decided to exempt the deduction against violation in terms of dispatch below 90% of quota in July.

India's sugar production in the current season ended September is seen at 32 million tonne, down from 33.1 million tonne last year, according to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories. In July, Informist had exclusively reported quoting ISMA's preliminary estimates that India's total sugar production in 2024-25 (Oct-Sep), without diversion to ethanol, is likely to be 33.31 million tonne, down 2% from last season.

The following table details the state-wise allocation of sugar sales limits for October, with the month-ago level, and the month-on-month change in percentage:
