MUMBAI – Prices of moong are expected to stay under pressure this week due to increased arrivals of the new kharif crop in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and the southern markets, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly outlook. There are sufficient government stocks of moong in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, which will also weigh on prices, it said.

Moong acreage in the country has increased this year, and the government is selling older stocks in Madhya Pradesh at lower rates, which could further weigh on prices, the report said. The arrivals of average quality moong with a higher moisture content from Maharashtra and the southern markets due to rainfall during harvesting were higher, while arrivals of good quality were lower. Moong with higher moisture content were selling at lower prices, the pulse body said.

However, the procurement of moong at the minimum support prices by the government, along with millers' demand for superior quality moong, could help support prices at lower rates, the report said.

Prices of moong showed mixed trends in the week ended Saturday due to limited trading, according to the report.

Meanwhile, better quality moong having less moisture content started arriving in the markets of Rajasthan, the report said. Yields were higher in the state due to favourable weather, and more arrivals are expected, the report quoted a trader from Jaipur. Moong acreage has increased on-year in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and the southern markets.

In the week ended Saturday, moong prices in Bidar, Karnataka, were down INR 493 from last week at INR 6,000-8,612 rupees per 100 kg. Prices of moong in Harda, Madhya Pradesh, were also down INR 50 from last week at INR 7,200-8,300 per 100 kg, the association said.  End
