MUMBAI – Prices of pulses were mixed in key spot markets of the country today, traders said. Prices of chana and tur were down while those of moong and masur were steady, they said.
CHANA prices in Akola in Maharashtra were down by 50–100 rupees from Wednesday to 7,725-7,750 rupees per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader said. Arrivals were down by 150 bags to 150 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). "Prices may remain down due to sluggish demand till mid-October," Kedia said. After that, chana prices could rise due to festival demand, he added. However, prices currently are not seen rising as they did a year ago during festivals. If prices do not rise much, stockists may start dumping their stocks in the markets in fear of a further fall in prices, ultimately bringing prices down, he said.
However, prices of chana in Indore in Madhya Pradesh were steady at 7,650-7,700 rupees per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
TUR prices in Akola were down by 100 rupees to 10,750-10,800 rupees per 100 kg, Kedia said. Arrivals were steady at 400 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). "There was a temporary increase in tur prices earlier in the week due to a spike in need-based buying, but they have now gone back to their previous low," he said.
The future of tur prices will depend largely on supply from Africa and the weather in kharif-producing areas, according to the association's weekly report. Planting of tur in the kharif season is higher than last year due to favourable weather, which could limit gains, it said.
Similarly, prices of tur in the key market of Kalaburagi in Karnataka were down by 175 rupees from Wednesday at 10,454–11,300 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals were down by 2,000 bags to 2,500 bags ( 1 bag = 50 kg).
MOONG prices in Kalaburagi were steady at 7,000-8,000 rupees per 100 kg, the association said. Arrivals were steady at 4,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices of moong in Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh were also steady at 7,200-7,800 rupees per 100 kg, it said. Arrivals were steady at 200 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
MASUR prices in the key wholesale market of Lalitpur were steady at 5,600-5,800 rupees for the "moti" type. Prices of the "choti" type rose by 100 rupees to 6,100-6,50 rupees per 100 kg, according to the association. End
