MUMBAI – Prices of pulses were mixed in key spot markets of the country today, traders said. Prices of chana and masur were steady, those of tur rose, and of moong fell, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at 7,850 rupees per 100 kg, local trader Raja Jain said. "Prices had risen slightly due to demand for Pitru Paksh, but they are steady today," he said. Demand will remain steady till next week, when buying for Navratri festival will start increasing, he said. Pitru Paksh is a 16-day lunar period when people observe vegetarianism, which increases demand for chana for making besan.
However, prices of chana in Akola in Maharashtra were up by 50 rupees from Thursday at 7,850-7,875 rupees per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Arrivals were steady at 500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
TUR prices in Solpaur, Maharashtra, were up 50 rupees from Thursday at 10,500-10,850 rupees per 100 kg, Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader, said. Arrivals were steady at three to four trucks, he said. "Business has picked up today, but it is temporary," Sanklecha said. Prices of tur are bound to fall in the long run due to cheaper imports from Africa, which will divert demand away from domestic tur, he said.
Similarly, prices of tur in the benchmark market of Kalaburagi in Karnataka were up by 50 rupees from Thursday at 10,000-11,059 rupees per 100 kg, according to data from the association. Arrivals were steady at 588 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
MOONG prices in Solapur were down 100 rupees from Thursday at 8,000-8,200 rupees per 100 kg, Sanklecha said. Arrivals were up at four to five trucks, he said. "Prices are down as the new crop from Rajasthan has started arriving, increasing supply," he said. Prices will continue to fall as markets are seeing ample supply coming from Karnataka and Maharashtra as well, he said.
Prices of moong in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at 8,200 rupees per 100 kg, local trader Vinod Jain said. Arrivals were up by 200 bags at 740 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), he said.
MASUR prices in Indore were steady at 6,000 rupees per 100 kg, Jain said. Arrivals were steady at 300 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), he said. "Demand for masur will remain steady in the long run, but prices may be affected by festival demand in October," he said.
Masur prices in the key wholesale market of Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh were steady at 5,600-5,850 rupees for the "moti" type, and those of the "choti" type were steady at 6,000-6,450 rupees per 100 kg, according to the association. End
