Govt conducts stakeholder consultation on kharif production outlook

MUMBAI – The Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare today conducted a stakeholder consultation on kharif 2024 crop production outlook, the ministry said in a press statement today.
"The focus of today’s discussion was production scenario of cereals and oilseeds along with cotton and sugarcane, ahead of the release of first advance estimates for the Kharif 2024 season, which are scheduled for October 2024," the statement read.
According to the department, while production of rice and maize will be promising for the upcoming season, that of cotton is likely to show a decline "due to crop diversification."
According to data released by the agriculture ministry on Tuesday, farmers had sown kharif crops across 109.7 mln ha, up 2% from a year ago, with notable increases in the acreage of paddy and maize. The area under paddy had risen 4% on year to 41 mln ha. Similarly, maize acreage across the country was up 5% at 8.8 mln ha. However, area under cotton had fallen 9% to 11.25 mln ha.
CRISIL Research, Agriwatch, India Pulses and Grains Association, Indian Oilseeds and Produce Export Promotion Council, Indian Sugar Mills Association, ICAR-Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research, Cotton Corporation of India, Department of Food & Public Distribution, Crop Development Directorates of Wheat, Sugarcane, Rice, Oilseeds and Cotton, and Department of Consumer Affairs were among the members in attendance.
