MUMBAI – Wheat, rice, and maize prices were steady today in key markets across the country, traders said. Traders expect wheat prices to remain steady for the next 10–15 days.

Prices of WHEAT were steady in Rajasthan's Kota and Mumbai's Vashi mandi at 2,600-2,625 rupees per 100 kg and 2,950 rupees per 100 kg, respectively, traders said. Arrivals in Kota were also steady at 6,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), Aniket Mehta, a local trader said. Arrivals will increase once the rainfall stops, Mehta said, adding that there is wheat with farmers but due to heavy showers, arrivals are low.

Wheat prices are likely to remain unchanged for the next 10-15 days, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale broker at Vashi mandi. Prices will increase later this month, when demand picks up ahead of the festival season starting in October, Vora said.

The government today reduced stock limits on wheat for traders, wholesalers, processors, and big chain retailers due to rising prices. The government also clarified that there is "ample availability of wheat in the country".

Prices of MAIZE were steady in Karnataka's Davanagere at 2,850-2,900 rupees per 100 kg, local trader Shiva Kumar said. There were no arrivals as there are no stocks from last year with the farmers, Kumar said. Traders, stockists, and poultry farms are waiting for the new maize crop, arrivals of which are likely to start later this month or early next month, Kumar said.

Karnataka's maize acreage as of Sep 6 was 1.6 mln ha, up from 1.5 mln ha a year ago, according to the state government's sowing report. Traders expect maize production to rise this year.

Prices of basmati RICE were steady at 7,000-7,300 rupees per 100 kg in Vashi, Vora said.
