MUMBAI – Prices of chana were down, while those of masur were steady today in the key wholesale market of Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, traders said. Prices of tur and moong were also steady in the benchmark market of Solapur, Maharashtra, they said.

CHANA prices in Vidisha were down by 100 rupees from Thursday to 7,500-7,700 rupees per 100 kg, Dinesh Mangal, a local trader said. Arrivals were down by 100 bags to 200 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), Mangal said. "Demand for chana has been stagnant this week as mill owners have already stocked up on chana for festive needs," he said. Prices could fall further once imports from Australia arrive in India, he said. However, the fall in prices could be capped in October when festive demand picks up for Diwali, he said.

India imports most of the chana from Australia and a bumper crop in the country will weigh on domestic prices, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report. The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences estimates chana production in 2024-25 (Jul-Jun) to surge 171% to 1.3 mln tn.

Chana prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at 7,750-7,775 rupees per 100 kg, the association said. Arrivals were steady at 200 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at 10,700-11,100 rupees per 100 kg, Rahul Srinivas, a local trader said. "Prices of tur have been stuck in the lower range because of low demand," he said. Demand for tur is only need-based, and is not affected by festive buying, as seen in other pulses such as chana, he said. The downtrend in prices of tur is usual for the season, he said.

Further, cheaper imports from African countries also weigh on tur prices. Tur imported from African countries such as Mozambique is being sold at 8,600 rupees per 100 kg, diverting demand away from domestic tur, Srinivas said.

Prices of tur in the key wholesale market of Kalaburagi, Karnataka, were steady at 10,551-11,254 rupees per 100 kg, as per the data from the association. Arrivals were steady at 427 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

MOONG prices in Solapur were steady at 6,000-8,000 rupees per 100 kg, Srinivas said. Arrivals at the market were steady at four-five trucks. "Prices of moong are varied according to their quality," he said. The lowest quality moong, which has a moisture content of 16-17%, is being sold at 6,000 rupees per 100 kg. Arrivals from Karnataka have a moisture content due to excessive rain in the state, he said.

However, the moisture content in upcoming moong arrivals could reduce, supporting prices in the long run, Srinivas said. Dry moong, which is of better quality, is being sold at 8,000 rupees per 100 kg, he said.

Moong prices in Vidisha were steady at 6,800-7,850 ruppes per 100 kg, Vinod Jain, a local trader said. Arrivals were steady at 600 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), Jain said.

MASUR prices in Vidisha were steady at 5,600-6,100 rupees per 100 kg, Mangal said. Arrivals were steady at 200 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), he said. "Prices will remain stable as demand will not pick up until the festive season in October-December," he said.

Masur prices in the key wholesale market of Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at 5,600-5,800 rupees for the "moti" type, while prices of the "choti" type were steady at 6,000-6,400 rupees per 100 kg, according to the association.  End
