MUMBAI – India's vegetable oil imports declined 16% on year to 1.56 mln tn in August, the Solvent Extractors' Association of India said today. The vegetable oil imports in August consisted of 1.53 mln tn of edible oils and 27,100 tn of non-edible oils, the association said. Edible oil imports in August fell 17% on year.

 

India is the world's largest importer of edible oils. The edible oil year runs from November to October and the basket comprises crude and refined palm oils, crude soyoil, and sunflower oil.

 

The cumulative import of vegetable oils in Nov-Aug, the first ten months of the current oil year ending October, declined 3% to 13.7 mln tn from 14.1 mln tn during the same period of last year, the association said. 

 

The import of crude palm oil in August fell 15% on year to 700,711 tn, while refined, bleached and deodorised palmolein declined 67% to 92,130 tn. Crude sunflower oil imports in August declined 22% to 284,108 tn from 365,870 tn a year ago, the association said. 

 

However, imports of crude soyoil in August were up 27% on year at 454,639 tn.

 

India imported palm oil from Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, and Thailand, soyoil from Argentina and Brazil, sunflower oil from Russia, Ukraine, and Argentina and refined, bleached and deodorised palmolien from Indonesia and Malaysia, the association said. 

 

As of Sep 1, the total stock of edible oil available was estimated at 2.93 mln tn, against 3.74 mln tn a year ago. Of the 2.93 mln tn, about 1.04 mln tn of edible oil was at ports and around 1.88 mln tn in the pipeline, the association said.
