MUMBAI – Grain prices were steady in key spot markets in the country today, traders said. Kota market in Rajasthan, the benchmark market for wheat prices, was shut today due to association elections, Aniket Mehta, a local trader said.
Prices of WHEAT in Mumbai's Vashi market were steady at 2,950 rupees per 100 kg, Devendra Vora, a wholesale broker, said. Wheat traders are expecting some action from the government amid lower stocks in the country. Wheat stocks in the Centre's pool fell to 25.1 mln tn as of Sep 1, below the buffer norm of 27.58 mln tn for Jul-Sep. The stocks are down due to low procurement during Apr-Jun, experts said.
Prices of MAIZE were steady today in Karnataka's Davanagere at 2,850-2,900 rupees per 100 kg, Shiva Kumar, a local trader said. There were no arrivals today as there are no crops from last year with the farmers, Kumar said.
Poultry farms in Karnataka are using stocks with them instead of buying the commodity from stockists or other states like Madhya Pradesh, Kumar said. "Prices of maize in Madhya Pradesh are also high and there will also be an additional charge for transport," Kumar said. Maize prices in Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh were around 2,600-2,700 rupees per 100 kg and transportation costs would add another 500-600 per 100 kg, Kumar said.
Prices of basmati RICE were steady at 7,000-7,300 rupees per 100 kg in Vashi, Devendra Vora, a wholesale broker, said.
