MUMBAI – NITI Aayog today released a report titled "Pathways and Strategies for Accelerating Growth in Edible Oils Towards the Goal of Atmanirbharta" recommending strategic interventions to increase domestic edible oil production and to reduce dependency on imports. The report was released by NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Suman Bery, in the presence of senior officials and industry players.
The strategic interventions include three key pillars, which are crop retention and diversion, horizontal expansion and vertical expansion. The report highlights the utilisation of rice fallow areas as a promising opportunity for horizontal expansion. By utilising one-third of the rice fallow area in 10 states for oilseed cultivation, oilseed production could be increased by 3.12 mln tn and reduce import reliance by 1.03 mln tn.
The report also highlighted that over the past decades, per capita consumption of edible oil in the country has reached 19.7 kg per year. This surge in demand has significantly outpaced domestic production, leading to heavy dependency on imports to meet both domestic as well as industrial needs.
Overall, with proposed strategic interventions, India could achieve projected edible oil supplies of 36.2 mln tn and 70.2 mln tn by 2030 and 2047, respectively. End
