--IMD: India Aug 28 rainfall 9.3 mm, 26% above normal 

--IMD: India Jun 1-Aug 28 rainfall 725.7 mm, 7% above normal 

MUMBAI – Rainfall across the country today was 9.3 mm, 26% above the normal of 7.4 mm, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 725.7 mm of rainfall, 7% above the normal of 679.5 mm for the period, it said.

Two out of four homogeneous regions in the country received below-normal showers today. Rainfall was 24% below normal at 7.3 mm in east and northeast India, and 22% below normal in south peninsula India at 4.0 mm. Rainfall was 48% above normal in the central region at 13.9 mm. Similarly, north-west India received 52% above normal at 8.8 mm today.

The weather bureau has issued a red alert for exceptionally heavy rainfall in Saurashtra and Kutch till Thursday. The department has advised farmers in these regions to drain excess water from field crops and horticultural crops. 

The department has also issued an orange alert for very heavy to extremely heavy showers in the Gujarat region, Uttarakhand, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. A red alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours, and an orange alert denotes very heavy rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm.

So far in the season, rainfall has been normal in 19 of the 36 subdivisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in nine, and "deficient" in five subdivisions, it said. Rainfall was "large excess" in three subdivisions since Jun 1. End
