MUMBAI – Prices of chana rose in most of the major markets of the country today due to strong festival demand, traders said. Prices of tur were down while those of moong, urad, and masur were steady across major markets in India, they said.
Spot prices of CHANA in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose 100–200 rupees to 7,850 rupees per 100 kg, local trader Raja Jain said. Chana prices rose due to strong festival demand with Janmastami right around the corner, Jain said. Similarly, spot prices in Ashok Nagar, Madhya Pradesh, rose by 100 rupees to 7,800-7,900 rupees per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader said. Both desi chana and imported chana are fetching good prices, he said. Prices could rise or remain steady in the long run and are not expected to fall anytime soon, he said.
Spot prices of TUR in Akola, Maharashtra were down by 100–200 rupees to 10,800 rupees per 100 kg, local trader Ashok Gupta said. Prices for tur have been falling for a month now, and they could fall further in the long run, Gupta said. Arrivals of domestic tur have fallen, while that of imported tur have risen, he said.
MOONG prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at 7,350-7,450 rupees per 100 kg, Kirit Mantri, a local trader said. Supply of moong from Karnataka has increased, ensuring sufficient stocks, he said. The acreage under moong in Karnataka in the current kharif season has risen sharply to 436,000 ha from 176,500 ha a year ago, according to the state's sowing data. "Market participants were of the view that there will be bulk buying because of the upcoming festivals, but that is yet to happen," Mantri said. Moong prices have been falling because new arrivals have 16-17% moisture content, he said.
Spot prices of URAD in Ashok Nagar, Madhya Pradesh, were steady and in the range of 7,700-8,600 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Most of the buyers are preferring urad from Chennai, he said. Urad prices are expected to remain stable for the next few weeks, he said.
MASUR prices in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh were stable at 6,000 rupees per 100 kg, Dinesh Mangal, a local trader said. Due to heavy rainfall in the state, arrivals are low in most of the mandis, Mangal said. "There is neither active supply nor active buying," he said. Fluctuations of 25–50 rupees every day do not affect the market much, he said. End
