NEW DELHI – The Congress and the National Conference have decided to contest the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly elections together, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah said today.
Addressing the media after meeting Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi at his residence in Srinagar, Abdullah said there would be an alliance for all 90 seats in Jammu & Kashmir. "The meeting was held in cordial atmosphere. The alliance is on track. It has been finalised and will be signed by the evening. The alliance is for all 90 seats," Abdullah said.
Earlier in the day, Gandhi told workers in Srinagar that the party would forge an alliance, but it would be based on the suggestions of local leaders and would ensure the respect of party workers. Gandhi also asserted that statehood for Jammu & Kashmir was the priority of the Congress party.
Elections to the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly will be held in three phases from Sep 18 to Oct 1, and counting will be held on Oct 4. This will be the first Assembly elections after the bifurcation of Jammu-Kashmir into two Union territories – Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh – and the abrogation of special status in 2019. The last Assembly elections were held in 2014 and the outcome was a hung Assembly, with no party getting absolute majority. The National Conference had won 15 seats, while the Congress won 12. The People's Democratic Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party had won 28 and 25 seats, respectively.
Earlier, the Congress and the National Conference had contested the Lok Sabha elections in alliance, with the Congress losing both the seats in Jammu, while the National Conference lost one of the three it contested in the Kashmir Valley. End
