NEW DELHI – The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare today discussed with other officials initiatives to improve the accuracy of agricultural data, the ministry said in a release. These initiatives are expected to provide near real-time and reliable field data, which will help form better farm policies, it added.

The conference, chaired by Farm Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi, highlighted the adoption of remote sensing, geospatial analysis, and artificial intelligence for efficient data collection with reduced discrepancies. "Digital General Crop Estimation Survey (DGCES) has been initiated to calculate yield based on scientifically designed crop cutting experiments for all major crops across the country," the release said.

An updated version of FASAL (Forecasting Agricultural output using Space, Agro-meteorology, and Land-based observations) will be used to generate accurate crop maps and area estimation for 10 major crops, it added. The UPAg portal allows cross-verification of data from multiple sources through triangulation and validation of the agricultural data, it added.

For yield forecasts, the ministry has collaborated with various agencies such as the Space Application Center, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, and Indian Statistical Institute. Chaturvedi also stressed continuous collaboration between the central and state governments to achieve the goal of reliable agricultural statistics.  End
