MUMBAI – Prices of chana, tur, and moong fell across major markets in India, while prices of urad were steady, traders said. Prices of most pulses fell due to lack of buyers, which further reduced business, they added.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were down by 50 rupees from Tuesday at 7,600-7,650 rupees per 100 kg, Kailash Kakani, a local trader, said. Prices of chana fell because there were very few buyers, Kakani said. "Chana prices are expected to rise in the long-run," Pradeep Sahu, another local trader from Indore said. Most of the markets in Madhya Pradesh were closed on Tuesday for regional festival Bhujariya held a day after Raksha Bandhan, he said.

Chana prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by 100 rupees from Tuesday to 6,000-7,500 rupees per 100 kg, Ankit Kedia, a local trader said. Arrivals in the local mandi were lower at 400 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), Kedia said. Chana prices had risen sharply before but due to an acute shortage of supply, the number of buyers has reduced in the past few days, he said. Spot prices of chana in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at 7,200-7,300 rupees per 100 kg, local trader Vinod Jain said. Arrivals in the market were very low at 200 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), Jain said.

TUR prices in Akola fell by 200 rupees to 10,500 rupees per 100 kg, Kedia said. There were very few buyers today, he said. Moreover, the supply of tur was also down, he said. In Solapur, Maharashtra, tur prices fell by 100 rupees to 13,000-14,000 rupees per 100 kg, Rahul Srinivas, a local trader said. Demand for tur is decreasing gradually, he said. Arrivals have increased as stockists are offloading their stocks fearing a further fall in prices, he said. Rise in supply and weak demand has pushed tur prices down, he said.

After deficient production last year, the acreage under pulses is up 6% on year at 12 mln ha, according to data provided by farm ministry on Tuesday. Within pulses, acreage under tur is significantly up by 12% on year at 4.5 mln ha, the data showed. The sharp increase in tur acreage is mainly due to the early onset of monsoon in top tur-producing states such as Karnataka. In the last kharif season, sowing of crops was delayed due to erratic monsoon. This also weighed on production of tur and maize and delayed the sowing of rabi crops as well.

Prices of MOONG in Vidisha were down by 50 rupees at 7,000-7,400 rupees per 100 kg, Vinod Jain, a local trader, said. Arrivals have fallen to 50–150 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) from 300-500 bags a month ago, he said. Spot prices of moong in Solapur, Maharashtra, fell by 100 rupees to 7,500 rupees per 100 kg, Rahul Srinivas, a local trader said. Arrivals in the market are low and the available stock is not of good quality, Srinivas said. The current stock of moong has 16-17% moisture, while traders usually prefer to buy dry moong, which is of better quality, he said. Buyers are paying less for the lower quality of moong, he said.

URAD prices in Vidisha were steady at 8,500 rupees per 100 kg, according to data provided by local trader Omprakash Upadhyaya. The market for urad is currently inactive, with only 10% of the normal arrivals hitting the mandi, Upadhyaya said. Arrivals in the mandi are between 100–120 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Urad prices will be stable and will not fall, he said.  End
