MUMBAI – India's oilmeal exports in July rose 18% on year to 451,794 tn, according to data released by The Solvent Extractors' Association of India today.

 

Exports of soymeal in July surged to 195,162 tn from 56,210 tn a year ago. Soymeal exports in Apr-Jul rose to 692,021 tn from 420,820 tn a year ago. This was due to higher imports of soybean meal by Iran and France, the association said.

 

However, for Apr-Jul, total oilmeal exports fell 2% to 1.55 mln tn, the data showed. "This is mainly due to reduction in the export of rapeseed meal, castorseed meal and no export of de-oiled rice bran since Sep 2023 due to export prohibition," the association said. The government has decided to extend the export prohibition of de-oiled rice bran till Jan 31, 2025.

 

"This will seriously affect the solvent extraction units located in West Bengal processing rice bran," the association said.

 

In July, exports of mustard meal fell to 234,507 tn from 273,379 tn a year ago. Similarly, during Apr-Jul, exports of rapeseed were down at 758,028 tn from 894,117 tn a year ago. Bangladesh is one of the major importers of rapeseed meal. "The current crisis in Bangladesh may affect at least the temporary halting of the export of rapeseed meal, mainly exported by road or rail," the association said.

Exports of castor seed meal fell to 22,125 tn from 25,554 tn a year ago, the SEA said. However, during Apr-Jul, exports of castor meal were down at 100,901 tn from 116,304 tn a year ago.

 

In Apr-Jul, 553,919 tn of oilmeal was exported from the Kandla port, against 367,355 tn a year ago, and a total of 346,775 tn was exported from the Mundra port, compared with 535,246 tn in the year ago period, the SEA said. During the same period, exports from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Mumbai rose to 257,843 tn from 138,201 tn a year ago, the association said. However, there was no export of oilmeals from the Kolkata port during Apr-Jul, compared with 110,200 tn a year ago, and 395,887 tn from other ports, compared with 440,345 tn in the same period last year, the association said.

 

During Apr-Jul, India's oilmeal exports to Bangladesh fell 12.30% on year to 288,027 tn. Similarly, exports to Vietnam fell 67.02% to 79,945 tn, the data showed. Oilmeal exports to South Korea were at 322,106 tn, lower than 349,579 tn a year ago, the data showed. "Iran has turned out to be the largest importer of soybean meal from India (including shipment via Dubai) and imported 114,475 tn of soybean meal," the SEA said.

 

In the case of rice bran meal, there were no exports from India in July, compared with 26,032 tn exported in the corresponding period a year ago, according to the data.
