MUMBAI – Prices of chana and moong were steady today across major markets in India, while those of tur fell, traders said. Ahead of anticipated festival demand this month, chana prices could improve further, they added.

CHANA prices were steady in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, at 7,450-7,575 rupees per 100 kg, according to Kailash Kakani, a local trader. "Prices of chana are not expected to fall in the long-term, observing strong demand ahead of festivals, and fall in supply," Kakani said. Similarly, chana prices in Amravati, Maharashtra, were stable at 6,800-7,200 rupees per 100 kg. Arrivals of the pulse in the market were up 200 bags to 600 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), the India Pulses and Grains Association said. "The demand for besan has increased hence the prices for chana is also going up," Veer Kumar Kadkol, a Karnataka-based trader said. "Across India, millers are purchasing actively," Pradeep Sahu, another trader from Madhya Pradesh said.

TUR prices in the key wholesale market of Kalaburagi, Karnataka, were down by 100 rupees at 10,119-11,216 rupees per 100 kg. Arrivals were down by 191 bags to 1,580 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). According to the farm ministry data, tur acreage has increased to 4.46 mln ha this year from 3.85 mln ha in 2023. The sharp increase in tur acreage was mainly due to the early onset of the monsoon in top tur-producing states such as Karnataka. During the last kharif season, the sowing was delayed due to erratic monsoon. This weighed on production of tur and maize, and delayed the sowing of rabi crops as well. "Sluggish buying by millers and cheaper import prices of tur are all together weighing on the domestic tur prices," Sahu added.

Prices of MOONG in the key wholesale market of Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh were steady at 7,200-7,750 rupees per 100 kg. Arrivals were up by 100 bags to 300 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), the association said. Moong prices at Pipariya in Madhya Pradesh were steady at 7,000-7,950 rupees per 100 kg, with arrivals unchanged at 7,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), it said. According to Kadkol, arrivals of new moong have increased currently in Gadag mandi, Karnataka. Arrival pressures are expected to remain for the next 15–20 days, the association said. Increased acreage of moong this kharif season could push prices down further, he said. India's kharif moong acreage so far is 3.3 mln ha, up over 9.7% from a year ago. End
