MUMBAI – Prices of chana rose in most markets across the country, while those of tur fell in key spot markets, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Prices of moong were stable in major markets in the country, according to the association.
CHANA prices in Amravati, Maharashtra, were up 100 rupees at 6,600-6,800 rupees per 100 kg. Arrivals of the pulse in the market were up 450 bags to 800 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), the association said. However, chana prices at Akola in Maharashtra were steady at 7,125-7,150 rupees per 100 kg. The arrivals were up 300 bags to 800 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), the association said.
Prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were up 50 rupees at 7,300-7,400 rupees per 100 kg, local trader Kailash Kakani said. Similarly, prices at Kalaburagi in Karnataka were up by 150 rupees at 6,500-7,000 per 100 kg, with arrivals at 300 bags, local trader Veerkumar Kadkol said. Moreover, lower availability of stocks by the government, reduced supply, and expensive imports, could further push up the prices in the long run, he said. "Millers are buying continuously ahead of the upcoming festival and seasonal demand," Pradeep Sahu, another Indore-based trader said.
TUR prices in the key wholesale market of Kalaburagi were down by 100 rupees at 10,251-11,413 rupees per 100 kg. Arrivals were up by 51 bags to 2,066 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Similarly, in Indore, tur prices were down 100 rupees at 11,300-11,500 rupees per 100 kg, Kakani said. "Millers are buying at a slower pace as tur demand is less as compared to chana dal," Kakani said. Moreover, increased tur acreage and shipments from Mozambique are also affecting tur prices negatively, the association said. According to the association, tur acreage has increased to 4.18 mln ha this year from 3.32 mln ha in 2023.
Prices of MOONG in the key wholesale market of Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh were steady at 7,200-7,650 rupees per 100 kg. Arrivals were unchanged at 400 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), the association said. Moong prices at Pipariya in Madhya Pradesh were steady at 7,000-7,950 rupees per 100 kg, with arrivals up by 6,000 bags at 8,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), it said. Prices in Kalaburagi were steady at 7,700-7,750 rupees per 100 kg, Kadkol said. Increased acreage of moong this kharif season could push prices down further, he said. India's kharif moong acreage so far is 3.2 mln ha, up over 14% from a year ago. End
