NEW DELHI – The government today launched the sale of tomatoes at 60 rupees per kg in Delhi to stabilise rising prices in the retail market. The National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd vans will be providing tomatoes at subsidised rates in Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon, according to an official release.
Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Pralhad Joshi told reporters in Delhi that the price stabilisation fund was not utilised for the initiative as the government directly procured tomatoes from local markets. The price stabilisation fund was set up in 2014-15 to help regulate the price volatility of important agri-horticultural commodities such as onions, tomatoes and pulses.
The National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India has been procuring tomatoes from local wholesale markets and selling them at reasonable retail prices, the release said. "This move aims to ensure that profit margins remain reasonable at the retail level and prevent windfall gains to intermediaries and thereby protect the interests of consumers," it added.
According to the official release, the vans will provide tomatoes at several locations in Delhi, starting today. It also said that the number of retail locations may be increased for the convenience of the consumer. End
