MUMBAI – Prices of tur fell in key wholesale markets on sluggish demand and cheaper imports, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Prices of chana and moong were steady in key markets of the country today, it said.

TUR prices in the key wholesale market of Kalaburagi fell by 150 rupees at 10,720-11,400 rupees per 100 kg. Arrivals were unchanged at 553 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices of tur in Akola, Maharashtra, were down by 200 rupees at 11,200-11,250 rupees per 100 kg, with arrivals at 800 bags.

"Tur prices have been declining due to sluggish demand, and cheaper tur imports from other countries," said Pradeep Sahu, a trader from Indore. Prices of tur are expected to face pressure due to upcoming arrivals from Africa and prospects of a robust harvest in India, the association said in its weekly report.

CHANA prices in Khamgaon, Maharashtra, were stable at 6,300-6,650 rupees per 100 kg. Arrivals of the pulse in the market were down by 200 bags (1 bag = 100 kg) at 400 bags, the association said. Similarly, prices at Amravati in Maharashtra were steady at 6,200-6,650 rupees per 100 kg. The arrivals were down by 100 bags at 600 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), the association said.

"Overall chana prices are expected to rise during (the) next month due to the upcoming festival demand," a local trader Kailash Kakani said. Also, lower arrivals in domestic markets are likely to boost prices of the pulse, he said.

Lower production, expensive imports, falling government stocks, and higher demand ahead of the festival season starting early next month are likely to support chana prices, the association said in the weekly outlook.

Prices of MOONG in the key wholesale market of Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh were stable at 7,200-7,700 rupees per 100 kg. Arrivals have been steady since the previous day at 500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), the association said.

Prices of moong are likely to remain steady with downward pressure due to expectation of higher supply and subdued mill buying, and prospects of increased moong acreage in the current kharif season, the association said in a report.  End
