NEW DELHI – Prices of mill-quality wheat fell in Kota, Rajasthan, due to a significant rise in arrivals of the crop, while those of maize rose in major markets of Davanagere in Karnataka due to firm demand, market participants said.

Prices of mill-quality WHEAT fell in Kota after arrivals of the staple grain increased notably, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Wheat was sold at 2,000-2,050 rupees per 100 kg in Kota, down 200 rupees from Friday.

Arrivals of the crop were pegged at 125,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), compared with 40,000 bags on the previous trading day, Mehta said.

In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, however, wheat prices remained steady from Friday at 2,200-2,240 rupees per 100 kg, said Lavish Shah, a local trader. Arrivals were pegged at 10,000 bags, up 1,000 bags from Friday.

The government has estimated the cereal's output at 112.2 mln tn, 4.2% above the previous year's output at 107.7 mln tn. At 112.2 mln tn, wheat output in the country would reach a record high level. However, the unusual behaviour of weather, first abnormal heat in some regions and then unseasonal rains in some others, has created uncertainty about the wheat output this season.

MAIZE was sold at 1,900-2,100 rupees per 100 kg in Davanagere, up 50 rupees from Friday due to robust demand for the grain, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals of the crop were pegged at 1,000 bags (1 bag = 65 kg), up 3,000 bags from the previous trading day.

In Purnea, Bihar, maize prices were steady at 2,450-2,500 rupees per 100 kg, said Kanhaiya Rastogi, a local trader. Arrivals were pegged at 900 bags, up 750 bags from Friday, Rastogi said.
