MUMBAI – The Multi Commodity Exchange of India will launch electricity futures contracts from Thursday. The exchange will launch contracts for the month of August, September, and October simultaneously, it said in a circular.

The symbol of the electricity futures contract is 'ELECDMBL'. The trading unit will be 50 megawatt-hour, and the maximum order size will be 50 times the trading unit. The contracts will be settled in cash and duration of the contracts will be four months.

The tick size or the minimum price movement will be INR 1 per megawatt-hour. The initial margin will be minimum 10% or based on the standard portfolio analysis of risk. In case of additional volatility, "an additional margin (on both buy & sell side) and/or special margin (on either buy or sell side) at such percentage, as deemed fit, will be imposed in respect of all outstanding positions," according to the circular.

The maximum allowable open position for individual clients will be 300,000 megawatt-hour or 5% of the market wide open position, whichever is higher. For a member collectively for all clients, the maximum allowable open position will be 3 million megawatt-hour or 20% of the market wide open position, whichever is higher, it said. End
