MUMBAI – The Madhya Pradesh government has announced a bonus of INR 175 per 100 kg over the minimum support price of INR 2,425 per 100 kg set by the Centre for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) to purchase wheat from farmers, Cheif Minister Mohan Yadav said Sunday in a post on the social media platform Linkedin. In 2024-25, the state government had announced a bonus of INR 125 per 100 kg over the minimum support price of INR 2,275 per 100 kg.

"The hard work of our farmers drives the prosperity of our state. To support their dedication, our government has set the wheat procurement price at INR 2,600 per quintal (100 kg), including a INR 175 bonus," according to the post. The government also announced an incentive of INR 4,000 per hectare for paddy farmers.

This move by the state government comes amid depleting wheat stocks with the Food Corp. of India. Madhya Pradesh is the second largest wheat producer after Uttar Pradesh. Last year, wheat production was pegged at 22.6 million tonnes in Madhya Pradesh, largely unchanged from the previous year.

However, the government had not met its wheat procurement target last year in the state due to high prices in the open market. Wheat prices have been firm in the open market for the last three years due to low production amid erratic rainfall and more heatwave days. Last rabi season, wheat procurement in Madhya Pradesh was at 4.8 million tonnes, 33% lower from the previous year.

The overall wheat procurement in 2024-25 was at 26.6 million tonnes, marginally above the previous year's purchase of 26.2 million tonnes, but sharply lower than the Central government's target of 30-32 million tonnes. For 2025-26, the government set the wheat procurement target at 31 million tonnes.

Besides Madhya Pradesh, the Rajasthan government, too, has announced a bonus of INR 150 per 100 kg over the minimum support price of INR 2,425 per 100 kg for the upcoming rabi marketing season starting in April. End
