NEW DELHI – Food Corp of India has written to the Ministry of Education, urging it to release pending dues of 650 mln rupees for foodgrains supplied for the Mid-Day Meal scheme, government officials told Informist.

"FCI is facing difficulty in getting timely payments for foodgrains being supplied under the Mid-Day Meal scheme," said one of the officials.

Under the scheme, FCI provides foodgrains to states to enhance nutrition and food security among children of primary and upper primary levels. FCI is the government's nodal agency for procurement and distribution of foodgrains through the public distribution system and other welfare schemes.

The Mid-Day Meal scheme was started on Aug 15, 1995, as National Programme of Nutritional Support to Primary Education. In October 2007, it was renamed National Programme of Mid-Day Meal in Schools.

In September 2021, the scheme was renamed Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman. Under this scheme, hot cooked meals are served to students in pre-primary levels, and those from government-aided primary schools.

The revamped scheme has been launched for five years, from 2021-22 (Apr-Mar) to 2025-26, with a financial outlay of 1.31 trln rupees.

The Ministry of Education is the entity authorised to implement the scheme.  End
