Informist, Thursday, Sep 26, 2024

NEW DELHI – The government today announced an increase in the minimum wage rates for workers by revising the variable dearness allowance, the labour ministry said in a release. The new wage rates will take effect from Tuesday.

The minimum wage rates are categorised based on skill levels--unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, and highly skilled--as well as by geographical areas--A, B, and C.

After revision, minimum wage rates in area "A" for workers in construction, sweeping, cleaning, loading and unloading for unskilled work will be 783 rupees per day and 20,358 rupees per month, the ministry said. For semi-skilled workers, the wage rate will be 868 rupees a day and 22,568 rupees per month.

For skilled, clerical and watch and wards without arms, the wage rate will be 954 rupees a day and 24,804 rupees per month. The wage rate for highly skilled and watch and ward with arms will be 1,035 rupees a day and 26,910 rupees per month.

"This adjustment is aimed at helping workers cope with the rising cost of living," the ministry said. "Workers engaged in various sectors, including building construction, loading and unloading, watch and ward, sweeping, cleaning, housekeeping, mining, and agriculture within central sphere establishments, will benefit from the revised wage rates."

The government revises the variable dearness allowance twice a year, effective from Apr 1 and Oct 1, based on the six-month average increase in the Consumer Price Index for industrial workers. The wage rates were last revised in April. End
