MUMBAI – India's imports of masur dropped 40.1% on year to 279,318.77 tn in Apr-Jul, while tur imports surged 59.7% to 275,393.78 tn during the same period, according to data released by the India Pulses and Grains Association today. Masur imports during Apr-Jul of last year were at 466,425.67 tn, while tur imports were at 172,448.81 tn during the period, the data showed.

Of the total imported quantity of masur in Apr-Jul, 154,690.57 tn came from Australia, 105,673.18 tn from Canada, and 18,955.04 tn from other countries, the association said. Last year, during the same period, India imported 267,696.99 tn of masur from Australia, 190,784.8 tn from Canada, and 7,943.89 tn from other countries.

During Apr-Jul, tur imports in India were 118,395 tn from Myanmar, 81,908.21 tn from Sudan, and 40,660.85 tn from Mozambique, the association said. Last year, during the same period, India imported 80,350.7 tn of tur from Myanmar, 30,196.71 tn from Sudan and 44,120.04 tn from Mozambique.

Prices of tur in the coming months will depend largely on supply from Africa and the weather in kharif-producing areas, according to the association's weekly report. Planting of tur in the kharif season is higher than last year due to favourable weather, which could cap the gains, it said.

According to media reports, there has been a downtrend in prices of pulses due to an increase in imports and also due to the expected arrival of kharif crops in the markets by November. End
